The Directorate General of Immigration has issued Forced Circumstance Residence Permits (Izin Tinggal Keadaan Terpaksa or ITKT) and waived overstay fees for foreign nationals and international passengers affected by flight cancellations resulting from the eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau.
Emergency residence permits issued by immigration offices are valid for a maximum of 30 days and may be extended in accordance with applicable regulations.
Director General of Immigration Hendarsam Marantoko explained the government’s commitment to providing legal certainty for foreign nationals in Indonesia. The immigration service agency’s official press statement was broadcast in Jakarta on Tuesday, 8th of September.
“We understand the difficult situation and inconvenience experienced by [international] passengers due to this flight disruption. The state is here to provide legal certainty,” he said.
Marantoko underlined the ease of the bureaucratic process, without imposing financial penalties on foreign guests and tourists. Moreover, the emergency services are provided free of charge to give foreign nationals peace of mind during flight delays.
“We ensure that ITKT arrangements run quickly, efficiently, and without the burden of overstay costs so that foreigners can feel calm. The state is here to provide legal certainty to foreigners affected by flight disruptions in this emergency situation so that they remain calm,” he continued.
A total of 520 flights were affected between the 5th and the 7th of September 2026. This figure comprises 254 cancelled arrival flights and 266 cancelled departure flights, impacting 86,760 passengers.
The following regulations apply to immigration services for those affected by the eruption:
- The immigration office overseeing the airport immigration checkpoint (Tempat Pemeriksaan Imigrasi or TPI) from which the foreign national was scheduled to depart will issue an ITKT valid for a maximum of 30 days, which may be extended in accordance with applicable regulations;
- A fee of Rp0.00 applies to foreign nationals who overstay due to flight delays or cancellations;
- Foreign nationals or airline representatives need only submit an official statement or declaration from the Civil Aviation Authority, the airline, or the airport authority, along with travel documents and a visa or residence permit.
