Indonesia’s Transsexual Muslims

Many of Indonesia’s transsexuals, also known as warias, are practicing Muslims even as many religious authorities shun their lifestyle and publicly shame them for alleged deviant behaviour. VICE follows a group of transsexuals in Yogyakarta to explore the waria culture, and discovers what happens at Senin-Kamis, an Islamic school dedicated to educating Indonesian transsexuals. It’s a sanctuary for these ladies who often face difficulties and extreme prejudice in their daily lives.
