Many of Indonesia’s transsexuals, also known as warias, are practising Muslims even as many religious authorities shun their lifestyle and publicly shame them for alleged deviant behaviour.
VICE follows a group of transsexuals in Yogyakarta to explore the waria culture and discover what happens at Senin-Kamis, an Islamic school dedicated to educating Indonesian transsexuals. It’s a sanctuary for these ladies who often face difficulties and extreme prejudice in their daily lives.
