The Indonesian Debt Collectors

VICE Indonesia explores the fascinating world of debt-collecting in Indonesia. Many of the men who are in this industry are from the eastern part of the country, where their darker and “scary” features are used to intimidate debtors. Violence was once rampant, but as large banks and regulations were introduced the industry was legitimized and debt-collectors have mostly put down their weapons. However, some of the old ways to instil fear via the use of violence still make it into some of the more difficult negotiations.
