Indonesia Expat has compiled a list of the best hike trails in Bali, perfect for immersing yourself in nature. These trails showcase Bali’s diverse landscapes, from volcanic peaks and lush jungles to terraced rice fields and stunning waterfalls, offering something for hikers of all levels.
Whether you’re a seasoned or beginner hiker, always remember to stay hydrated and wear appropriate attire. Light, breathable clothing and sturdy hiking boots are recommended.
Mount Batur Sunrise Trek
One of the most popular hikes in Bali, the Mount Batur Sunrise Trek offers breathtaking views of the sunrise over the volcanic landscape. On a clear day, the imposing silhouette of Mount Agung, Bali’s highest peak, can be seen in the distance, adding to the dramatic scenery. The hike is relatively moderate, taking approximately 2-3 hours to reach the summit at 1,717 metres above sea level. Hikers can enjoy panoramic views of Mount Agung and the surrounding caldera.

Mount Agung Hike
Mount Agung is the highest point in Bali, standing at 3,031 metres, and holds significant spiritual importance in Balinese culture as it is believed to be the abode of the gods. This challenging hike is for experienced trekkers, taking about 6-7 hours to reach the summit. The trek typically begins late at night, around 11 PM to midnight, to ensure hikers reach the summit in time for sunrise. There are two alternate routes, namely the Pura Besakih Route; the longer and more difficult route starting from the Besakih Temple, known as the “Mother Temple” of Bali. Then, there is the Pasar Agung Route, a shorter but steeper route starting from the Pasar Agung Temple.

Campuhan Ridge Walk
A relatively easy hike that takes you through lush greenery and along a ridge with spectacular views of the Ubud countryside. The 2-kilometre trail is perfect for a leisurely walk, offering a peaceful escape from the bustling town centre. The trail begins near the Warwick Ibah Luxury Villas & Spa, which is easily accessible from central Ubud. Early morning or late afternoon are the best times to visit, as the temperatures are cooler and the lighting is perfect for photography.

Sekumpul Waterfall Trek
This hike leads you through the jungle to one of Bali’s most beautiful waterfalls. The trail can be quite challenging, featuring steep inclines, slippery paths, and several river crossings. The trek to Sekumpul Waterfall starts from the village of Sekumpul.
Sekumpul Waterfall is actually a series of seven waterfalls, with the main falls cascading from a height of about 80 metres (260 feet). At the base of the waterfalls, there are natural pools where hikers can take a refreshing dip.

Jatiluwih Rice Terraces Walk
A UNESCO World Heritage site, the Jatiluwih Rice Terraces offer a serene hiking experience through expansive, terraced rice fields.
