Indonesia’s first Skytrain is set to begin operations between Soekarno-Hatta International Airport’s busy terminals next month.
The first Skytrain unit has been installed, with airport operator Angkasa Pura II set to complete two more units connecting the second and third terminals. Each unit is capable of transporting up to 176 passengers in the busy international airport.
Angkasa Pura II President Director Muhammad Awaluddin said the second unit is expected for July.
The APMS technology incorporates an Automated Guideway Transit system and a self-propelling engine, which means it operates without the need of a human driver.
“We have planned for the Skytrain to operate with a driver for the first six months. This is because we have never used this kind of technology before. In the meantime, we will ready the standard operating procedure for driverless operations,” Awaluddin said.
Woojin, the South Korean firm behind the Skytrain technology, recommends the six month dual-drive period.
The Skytrain is free for passengers, airport officials and the general public to use. The development of the system is the latest in a string of changes made to Soekarno-Hatta to better service passenger.
