On an island where every corner boasts its own distinct charm, it’s impossible not to pick favourites. Personally, Sanur is one truly dear to my heart. Whether it’s a brief escape or an extended stay, I always leave feeling rejuvenated.
As the year winds down, one mustn’t forget to reward oneself for making it through. Sanur is just about the perfect place one could think of to do so, and where better to indulge yourself in a self-rewarding getaway of luxury and tranquillity if not at the InterContinental Bali Sanur Resort?
The InterContinental Bali Sanur Resort is renowned for beautifully capturing the serene essence of Sanur with its blend of luxury and local charm. Situated along Sanur’s quaint and charming coastline, the resort offers spacious suites and villas, complete with modern comforts and touches of Balinese elegance. Its beachfront location provides stunning sunrise views, while the lush gardens reflect Sanur’s laid-back appeal. Guests can savour exceptional dining at Pier Eight, relax at the Sansara spa, stay active in the state-of-the-art gym, or explore nearby cultural landmarks, ultimately making the resort an obvious choice when one seeks to experience the true allure of Sanur.
A welcome sets the tone for every experience—much like the prologue to a story—and what a memorable welcome it was. A traditional Balinese blessing ritual awaited me upon my arrival, immersing me in the island’s rich culture from the start. I sipped on the refreshing coconut water welcome drink and enjoyed the captivating music playing in the background, where two men played the traditional Balinese instrument, rindik, serenading as I awaited the check-in process.
They opened the doors to the luxurious Junior Ocean Suite, and I was stopped in my tracks. The suite exuded a perfect blend of sophistication, charm, and cosy elegance, all wrapped in an incredibly spacious design. The bedroom was nothing short of stunning, adorned with standing art pieces flanking the bed and an elegant floral centrepiece gracefully positioned behind, right at the centre of the bed. The bathroom was equally impressive—brightly lit and expansive, complete with a large bathtub and a separate shower that invited relaxation.
Stepping onto the balcony, I was awestruck once more. The space was a harmonious fusion of luxury and authentic artistry, featuring the iconic Javanese Batik Kawung pattern on the windows. This intricate design, symbolising purity, resilience, and harmony, added a meaningful cultural touch to the suite’s refined aesthetic.
I left the suite and strolled through the resort’s lush greenery, feeling the gentle ocean breeze that seemed to waltz in to embrace me. Along the way, I noticed four pelinggih scattered throughout the grounds, a testament to the resort’s deep cultural and spiritual respect for Balinese traditions.
Continuing my exploration of the resort led me to what appeared to be a Balinese dance class in full swing! Delightful young girls were dancing at the gazebo while the boys were playing in the garden next to them. Curious about this lively scene, I soon learned that these children were from a local village nearby. Every Thursday, the InterContinental Bali Sanur hosts Balinese dance classes conducted by a local sanggar tari from the village. Open for all to join, these classes provide an opportunity to experience authentic Balinese culture while supporting the local community. I lingered for a while, taking in the scene of the kids dancing and playing so joyfully. My heart melted at the knowledge that the resort actively gives back to the community through these meaningful initiatives.
After the walk, I thought, “What’s a self-reward getaway without a little self-care?” With that in mind, I treated myself to a 60-minute full-body Balinese Massage at Sansara Spa. As I sipped on the refreshing Rosella Tea they prepared, I filled out a brief questionnaire and selected my preferred oil–soothing green tea–while they readied the treatment room. Once the room was ready, Widhi, my masseuse, greeted me with a kind and gentle demeanour that instantly put me at ease.
Widhi began the session with the resonant tones of a Balinese sound bowl, setting a tranquil mood that quickly lulled me into relaxation. Her skilled hands worked wonders, and before long, I drifted into dreamland. When the session ended, Widhi kindly assisted me and offered me ginger tea and water. After a few sips, I made my way back to my room, feeling refreshed and ready to prepare for dinner.
Dinner at Pier Eight was a lovely way to end my day. The restaurant boasts a wonderfully diverse menu of international cuisine, offering something for every palate. The waitress, Yanti, was pleasantly bubbly and helpful when I sought her recommendations—and she did not disappoint.
I started with the Mango Tango, a refreshing juice of all my favourite fruits! Mango, strawberry, and pineapple in one tasty blend. For the appetiser, I chose Beef Carpaccio, with Herring Caviar, served with a flavourful mix of horseradish and ponzu dressing, sesame, coriander, and crispy fried potato. Then, following Yanti’s spot-on suggestion, I indulged in Ikan Kakap Sambal Kecombrang, as I was craving a more local taste. The dish featured delicious crispy skin-seared kakap paired with ginger flower sambal, fresh kemangi and coconut rice.
Despite being filled to the brim, I couldn’t resist dessert. As I pondered my choice, a sudden thunderstorm broke out, leaving me fated to stay a little longer. That’s when I spotted the Chocolate Mousse with Cashew Nut Brittle, practically calling my name. Topped with vanilla whipped cream and served with speculoos biscotti, it was a heavenly conclusion to an already memorable meal. I lingered over each bite, savouring the rich flavours as the storm subsided. Once the skies calmed, I strolled back to my room through the dewy night air, feeling indulgently spoiled after such a feast.
When my alarm rang at 5 AM, I groggily pulled myself out of the heavenly bed; the excitement of seeing Sanur’s sunrise again outweighed the sleepiness. Sanur’s sunrises have always been magical to me, though I worried that the rain from the previous night might’ve clouded the skies. To my delight, it seemed the Gods were on my side. I hurried to the balcony, opened the blinds, and let my sights feast on the breathtaking canvas of soft pastel hues–strawberry pink, lavender, and orange dancing in the skies.
As the colours gradually faded, leaving me alone in a state of awe, I lingered a little longer to breathe in the cool morning air. Then, I returned to the plush bed for just a few more hours of slumber.
After an added rest, I was famished for the breakfast buffet at Pier Eight. The spread was vast, but I made a beeline for my favourite—the charcuterie station. With a plate of smoked salmon, ham, and a selection of delicious cheeses, I moved on to the next station, where I piled on some mouthwatering mie goreng and ordered scrambled eggs with extra cheese. The breakfast menu was a treat, and the service was top-notch!
As I sipped my morning tea, I watched the restaurant come to life around me. Sophisticated families, couples, and groups of energetic youngsters had already arrived, fresh-faced and ready for their day. I couldn’t help but wonder if they, too, had spent the last 24 hours indulging in the wonders of the resort.
I reflected on my stay as I prepared to return to life as we know it, feeling a deep sense of gratitude for the experience. The InterContinental Bali Sanur Resort had truly taken care of me, offering not just luxury but an inspiration for the soul. Though I was devastated to leave, I knew that Sanur, the resort, and this entire experience were just a drive away—and I couldn’t wait to return.
