West Nusa Tenggara Housewife Jailed in Blasphemy Case

A housewife from West Nusa Tenggara province has been jailed for two and a half years after being found guilty of blasphemy case, according to a report from Agence France Presse.

Siti Aisyah was found guilty of insulting Islam on Monday, Aug. 21, after she was reported to authorities for spreading Islamic teachings which differed from the teachings of local Islamic leaders. She also called the ulemas liars for disagreeing.

“What she has committed was an insult to our religion, she is dangerous for a religious city like Mataram,” Mataram District Court Presiding Judge Didiek Jatmiko said.

Aisyah was named a suspect back in February – during the height of a similar case against former Jakarta governor Basuki ‘Ahok’ Tjahaja Purnama – after publishing her views online and via distributed fliers.

“We sentenced her to two and a half years in prison because she did not regret her crime at all, she is adamant that her belief is the ultimate truth,” Jatmiko said.

She rejected a lawyer and did not defend the charges nor will she appeal, AFP reported.
