One of the world’s largest automotive manufacturers, Volkswagen (VW), has revealed that it will produce battery-based electric cars, also known as battery electric vehicles (BEV), in Indonesia starting in 2026.
According to the Head of Sales Volkswagen Indonesia, Badawi Marsahan, this effort confirms the company’s commitment to the Indonesian market while supporting the government’s initiative to develop an electric vehicle industry ecosystem and increase competitiveness in the national market.
“In 2026 we will produce ID Buzz at the PT National Assemblers factory in Cikampek, West Java. This is a new investment,” he told the press on Friday, the 22nd of November. “The same factory as the Tiguan AllSpace assembly site.”
The selection of the ID Buzz as the first model to be produced in Indonesia was based on the positive response from the public after it was introduced at the Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS) 2024, which took place back in July this year. This product, which is a development of the VW Combi, also carries the original values of the VW brand. Using the Modular Electric Drive Matrix (MEB) platform, the car is marketed at a price of Rp1.3 billion.
The ID Buzz itself is equipped with a 79-kWh battery installed on the vehicle floor for space efficiency and stability. The electric motor is capable of producing 207.1 hp and a peak torque of 560 Nm.
“Currently, orders for the ID Buzz have reached more than 200 units, with an indent period until June-July 2024,” added Marsahan.
