Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung recently divulged that PT Transportasi Jakarta (Transjakarta) will manage maritime transport to the Thousand Islands (Kepulauan Seribu) region starting in 2027.
Anung explained that the decision represents a strategic move to improve the transportation system connecting the mainland and the islands. Previously, the management of maritime transport fell under the jurisdiction of the Jakarta Transportation Agency.
“Starting next year, transportation from all parts of the city—as well as the Thousand Islands—must be easier and more efficient. Management will no longer be handled by the [Jakarta] Transportation Agency but will be transferred to a regionally-owned enterprise, specifically Transjakarta,” the Governor said at the Bundaran HI roundabout in Jakarta on Sunday, the 9th of August.
Anung also noted that the policy aims to facilitate travel for residents from the Jakarta mainland to the Thousand Islands, and vice versa for residents of the Thousand Islands wishing to travel to various areas within Jakarta.
“We must be fair to all Jakarta residents, including those in the Thousand Islands. Therefore, I have decided that starting next year, transportation from all areas of Jakarta to the Thousand Islands must be easier and more efficient, ensuring that the Thousand Islands community feels a sense of ownership and inclusion in the system,” he stated.
According to Anung, Transjakarta possesses experience in managing public transportation in Jakarta, especially as the regionally-owned enterprise already operates the Transjabodetabek service, which provides public transport connections between Jakarta and various satellite areas.
Nevertheless, the Jakarta Provincial Government must first prepare regulations regarding maritime transport services provided by Transjakarta, as there is currently no legal framework authorising Transjakarta to launch such services.
“Given that experience, as well as the current management—which is relatively strong and transparent—I am confident that, hopefully, transportation to the Thousand Islands can be well-managed [by Transjakarta] starting next year,” he added.
