Tasikmalaya Shaken by 4.0 Magnitude Quake

A 4.0 magnitude earthquake has jolted Tasikmalaya regency in West Java on Saturday 10th August at 11.50pm local time.

The tremor was centered in the sea, and no tsunami warnings have been issued so far.

According to the Meteorological, Climatological, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the quake occurred at 8.23 south latitude and 108.18 east longitude. “It was precisely at the sea, 64 kilometres southwest of Tasikmalaya,” the agency’s area head, Hendro Nugroho, confirmed. He added that the hypocentre was 22 kilometres.

The seismic activity was also felt by the people of Pangandaran. Hendro added that the quake occurred due to the megathrust subduction in the south of Java island, related to the movement of the Indo-Australia plates.
