Mount Sinabung in Karo Regency of North Sumatra has erupted this morning at 7.48 am local time. The ash cloud is expected to reach a height of 2,000 metres.

According to the Centre of Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation (PVMBG), the thick, grey ash secretions are leaning towards the east and southeast. Several villages around Sinabung have been hit hard by volcanic ash descending on them.

Mount Sinabung’s status is currently set at level 4, or ‘alert’ level. The PVMBG has reminded the public to stay between 3-7 km away from its radius. The agency is also encouraging those who live near the banks of the river leading towards the volcano to be alert to possible lava floods, especially during heavy rainfalls.
