Bandung Tornado Damages Hundreds of Houses

A tornado hit the sub-district of Rancaekek, Bandung Regency on Friday afternoon, January 11, and a total of 200 people have been displaced to different evacuation posts, Masjid Al-Muhajirin and Al-Ikhlas.

Baban Bajar, head of Rancaekek, said that most of the people did not want to move to the evacuation camps and insisted to stay in their damaged houses.

“Those who are affected by minor damage will definitely choose to stay in their own houses,” Baban told Tempo in an evacuation camp on Saturday, January 12.

There are no casualties in the disaster, however two people are seriously injured and around 100 people suffered from minor injuries. They are being treated in Al-Islam hospital in Bandung, said Baban.

The tornado has ruined approximately 600 houses, with 150 of them suffering severe damage. The loss is estimated at around Rp2 million to Rp50 million per house.

Moreover, as a result of the heavy rain, the roads in the residential area are flooded, as the non-functioning drainage system caused the water to overflow to the roads.
