One Child Dies after a Landslide Hits Sukabumi Railway Project

National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said landslides occurred in the Kampung Nyalindung railroad construction project at Cicurug Urban Village in Sukabumi, West Java, where a 10-year-old child was reported dead. The incident occurred on Thursday evening, January 10 at around 4pm local time.

“The report came from Cicurug Resort Police, and it’s confirmed via a phone call by Cicurug sub-district office,” said an official of Sukabumi Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD), Rahmawan, in a written statement Thursday, January 10.

The incident began when the victim, Muhammad Rifki, and five of his friends played at the railroad construction project area at 3.30pm since there was no construction activity at that time. Suddenly, the wall with a perpendicular slope in the project site eroded and buried four of the children, while two managed to save themselves.

Three children named Muhammad Rizki (10); Muhammad Nurahman (7); and Muhammad Zikri (8) were quickly saved and were rushed to Medicare Cicurug Hospital, while Rifki, who was buried in the lowest avalanche, was found lifeless after being evacuated in the next 30 minutes.

Following the landslide incident, Sukabumi BPBD had coordinated with sub-district and local communities. Rahmawan appealed to the public to contact BPBD reporting center for a similar incident in other locations.
