Jakarta to Conduct Routine Nightclub Patrol after Drugs Raid

Following the discovery of drugs in a raid of MG International Club on Sunday, the Jakarta government has warned that it will closely monitor other nightclubs to curb drug use in the city.

The raid, conducted by the National Narcotics Agency (BNN) in cooperation with Tanjung Duren Police and the military, found the club facilitating the production and sale of liquid methamphetamine. The discovery has consequently led to the nightclub being shut down by the city government.

As a follow-up measure, the government has vowed to keep a close eye on other nightclubs in the city to prevent illegal activities, especially as it relates to drugs.

“We will first check the administrative licenses and operational hours of the clubs as well as the activities inside,” said Jakarta Public Order Agency (Satpol PP) head Yani Wahyu Purwoko as reported by The Jakarta Post.

Yani added that the patrols would be carried out by his agency in cooperation with Jakarta Military Police (Pomdam Jaya), and would particularly target nightclubs suspected of facilitating drug-dealing activities.

The raid on MG Club is the latest in a series of serious actions taken by the new city government against nighttime entertainment centers. In the last two months, the government has closed down the Diamond Discotheque in West Jakarta over drug distribution activities inside the venue, and the Alexis Hotel and a massage parlour in North Jakarta for allegedly facilitating prostitution.
