Terror concerns in nearby southern Philippines has prompted the Indonesian Military to hasten plans to strengthen national security with the development of military bases along the sea border.
President Joko ‘Jokowi’ Widodo has been notified by the Indonesian Military (TNI) of the plan to construct several new bases on the archipelago’s outer islands amid fresh fears of Islamic extremism.
“We will build military bases on the outer islands such as Natuna, Morotai, Biak and several others,” TNI Gen. Comm. Gatot Nurmantyo said, as quoted by Detik.
The military bases will be capable of accommodating carrier ships and high-tech equipment to protect borders in far flung outer islands, Nurmantyo said.
“The other military bases will be just the same as the one in Natuna,” he said.
Minister of Defense Ryamizard Ryacudu said the government is in the process of building a suitable dock for defense ships at Natuna. The existing runway at the airport will also be extended to accommodate military aircraft needs while a dock development will ensure the base can cater to three frigates.
Ryacudu has taken a great interest in monitoring development of the Natuna base, often visiting the island.
An order of submarines from South Korea is also part of the expansion, with the vessels set to service the new bases.
