Back in 2017, I came across posts about the Ruins of St. Paul and the Fortress of St. Paul, and I immediately wanted to visit.
I thought those structures were truly old but incredibly grand. Fast forward to 2023, I started noticing the massive structures and luxurious hotels in Macao, often mimicking cities like Paris, London, and Venice, which gave the city a unique concept. Then, in 2024, when I finally visited, I found myself once again mesmerized by its visual splendour. This unique opportunity allowed me to discover facets of Macao that went far beyond its well-known attractions.
Upon arriving, my expectations were exceeded in every way. Yes, Macao is grand—its luxurious side is undeniable—but what truly captivated me were the other layers that I hadn’t anticipated. There’s the historical side, with an “old town” charm full of character, and then there’s Coloane, my personal favourite, an island that is a serene contrast to the bustling urban environment. On Coloane, you can hear the gentle sounds of nature, from the rustling of trees to the chirping of birds. The tranquillity of this island made it a place I couldn’t get enough of, a haven where time seemed to slow down.
What also struck me about Macao was the unique blend of cultures. Before my trip, I had thought of Macao as being closely tied to China. But once I arrived, I discovered the strong Portuguese influence that is woven into the fabric of the city. From street signs in Portuguese to colonial architecture, the presence of Portuguese culture is undeniable. It’s fascinating how Macao has managed to seamlessly merge these two different worlds, offering an experience that feels both familiar and exotic at the same time.
As a traveller from Southeast Asia, I found the cultural differences between Macao and Indonesia striking. The culinary scene was an eye-opener for me. I had never been a fan of Chinese food—especially the kind I had tried in Indonesia—but the authentic flavours I encountered in Macao completely changed my perspective. The food here was exquisite, blending Chinese traditions with Portuguese influences. One dish that stood out was the Chinese-style duck, a meal I never thought I would enjoy, but after tasting it in Macao, I found myself craving it long after the trip.
Beyond the food and cultural discoveries, what made this trip unforgettable was the way it allowed me to explore both well-known attractions and hidden gems. Thanks to Macao Government Tourism Office, I was able to go beyond the grandeur that everyone associates with Macao and delve into its quieter, more serene side. Coloane Island, for instance, was a highlight for me. I love nature, and this peaceful escape offered a lush, green environment where I could relax and connect with the natural world, far away from the hustle and bustle of the city. It’s a side of Macao that not many people talk about but one that truly deserves to be explored.
In terms of logistics, getting around Macao was incredibly easy and seamless. Whether you choose to hop on public transportation or rent a car, everything is convenient and accessible. Macao is also a fantastic destination for families. From exciting night bus tours to exhibitions like the magical Harry Potter experience, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.
And if you’re into art and immersive experiences, don’t miss the teamLab installation! This mind-blowing interactive digital art exhibit completely wowed me with its whimsical and futuristic displays. The way the lights, colours, and sounds blended together was just beyond amazing—it’s something both kids and adults will find fascinating. It’s like stepping into a dreamy, colourful world, perfect for snapping fun Instagram-worthy photos!
Reflecting on my trip, three words come to mind when I think of Macao: luxury, tradition, and tranquillity. The blend of these elements is what makes the city so unique. It’s not just a place for those who love extravagance—it’s also for those who seek cultural richness and serene natural beauty. As someone who loves staycations, I was thrilled to experience one hotel during my visit, but I can’t wait to return and try out more of the luxurious and unique hotels Macao has to offer. I’m always on the lookout for distinctive and elegant places to stay, and Macao is a destination where I want to explore more of its beautiful accommodations, as well as its nature and hidden gems even further.
