Nespresso Honours Sofitel Bali Nusa Dua Beach Resort for Recycling Over 41,000 Coffee Capsules

Nespresso Honors Sofitel Bali Nusa Dua Beach Resort for Recycling Over 41,000 Coffee Capsules

As one of the world’s most visited destinations, Bali continues to face growing challenges related to waste management.

According to data from the National Waste Management Information System (SIPSN), the island generated more than 1.2 million tons of waste in 2024, making sustainability an increasingly important focus, particularly within the hospitality industry.

In response, more hotels across Bali are integrating responsible practices into their daily operations, including recycling initiatives and circular economy programs aimed at reducing environmental impact.

One such initiative is Nespresso’s used coffee capsule recycling program, through which the company collaborates with hospitality partners to ensure that waste is not only reduced but also repurposed sustainably.

As part of this ongoing effort, Nespresso has presented Sofitel Bali Nusa Dua Beach Resort with a Sustainability Award in recognition of the resort’s active participation in the recycling program. Throughout 2025, the resort successfully returned more than 41,422 used coffee capsules for recycling, reflecting its continued commitment to embedding sustainability into everyday operations.

We are honoured to receive this recognition from Nespresso,” said Jean-Pierre Joncas, General Manager of Sofitel Bali Nusa Dua Beach Resort. “It reflects our commitment to integrating sustainable practices across the resort. We believe that even simple actions, such as responsibly managing used coffee capsules, can contribute to a more sustainable future for Bali’s tourism industry.”

Nespresso’s recycling program is designed around a circular approach, where each used capsule is given a second life. For hotel partners, used capsules are collected alongside regular coffee deliveries before being transported to Nespresso’s facility in Jakarta. There, the aluminium is separated and repurposed into new products. At the same time, the coffee grounds are returned to coffee farms in West Java, where they are used as compost to support future crops.

Looking ahead, we aim to continue strengthening our collaboration with partners such as Sofitel Bali Nusa Dua Beach Resort to expand the reach of this program,” said Mark Ashlin Senior, Senior Vice President of Kanmo Group. “Our goal is to ensure that every capsule can be responsibly recycled while contributing to a more sustainable ecosystem.”
