Indonesia to become the Fifth-largest Air Travel Market in the World

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has estimated that the number of domestic passengers carried by Indonesian airlines will increase to 355 million in 2036, making Indonesia the fifth-largest air travel market in the world, behind China, the United States, India and Turkey. According to an IATA press release, Indonesia is one of the fastest-growing air travel markets in the world.

Transportation Minister Budi Karya Sumadi said that the government has expanded many airports all over the country to anticipate this increase in airline passengers. The country aims to increase tourist arrivals as well, as reported by The Jakarta Post

“We have to be ready for this jump in the number of passengers. That is why we are building more and more airports across Indonesia,” the minister told The Jakarta Post on Thursday.

State-owned airport operator PT Angkasa Pura II also plans to renovate terminals 1 and 2, following the completion of Terminal 3 at Soekarno-Hatta International airport in Tangerang.

Terminals 1 and 2 will be used for domestic flights, while the new Terminal 3 will be used exclusively for international flights.
