The Jakarta Provincial Government has proposed that the revitalisation of the Kota Tua area be designated a National Strategic Project (Proyek Strategi Nasional or PSN).
Moreover, the provincial government is inviting collaboration between the Indonesian sovereign wealth fund Danantara and the Indonesian Ministry of Tourism.
The proposal was submitted by Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung following a meeting with the Indonesian Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Airlangga Hartarto, at the Coordinating Ministry’s office in Central Jakarta on Monday, the 10th of November.
“Today [Monday, the 10th of November], we met with the Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs to discuss two matters: the development of the Kota Tua area and the construction of an international-standard hospital on the Sumber Waras land. We are proposing that both projects be designated as National Strategic Projects to facilitate their development,” said Anung.
The Jakarta Provincial Government has proposed the initiative as a National Strategic Project to streamline the development process.
In revitalising the Kota Tua area, Anung stated that the Jakarta Provincial Government would carry out essential infrastructure works such as improving pedestrian pathways, repairing roads, and normalising rivers, starting in 2026. Assets managed by Danantara, meanwhile, would be restored by the central government, to boot.
Anung also added that all necessary administrative preparations for the development would be completed promptly. If included in the National Strategic Project list, the Kota Tua revitalisation project would, as a result, receive priority status. Furthermore, through PT MRT Jakarta, the Jakarta Provincial Government is also constructing Phase 2 of the MRT lane, linking the Hotel Indonesia Roundabout (Bundaran HI) to Kota Tua, which is scheduled for completion in 2029.
“By 2027, MRT construction will be carried out underground rather than at surface level. Therefore, it is hoped that the renovations and improvements to the Kota Tua area can be completed by 2027 [as well]. By 2029, the MRT will be connected to Kota Tua, turning it into a TOD [Transit-Oriented Development] area,” said Anung.
Anung, ultimately, emphasised the importance of collaboration to ensure optimal development and management of the Kota Tua area.
“In the Kota Tua area, there are a number of assets owned by the central government through state-owned enterprises. Therefore, synergy and collaboration between Danantara and the Jakarta Provincial Government will be crucial to ensuring optimal revitalisation,” he added as well.
