According to the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) the upcoming Idul Fitri holidays will coincide with early phase of the dry season.
The agency has warned the public about the possibility of having extreme weather in early June.
About 10 million people are expected to travel to their hometowns from big cities such as Jakarta and Surabaya during Idul Fitri or Lebaran holidays, in a yearly tradition called ‘mudik’. The home-coming exodus is expected to begin a week before Eid in May 31. A reverse exodus is expected to take place after Idul Fitri in June 6.
Dwikorita Karnawati, chairperson of BMKG has predicted low levels of rainfall in June. She also stated that there is a possibility for forest and land fires to take place in areas of Sumatra and Central Java. However, Aceh and North Sumatra will most likely experience floods due to potential landslides in areas with sloped toll roads.
High tides between 2-2.5 Metres are also expected to occur in the Indian Ocean, especially in the Southern Java Sea, West Sumatra, and the East and West of Nusa Tenggara. In order to detect tsunami potential, Dwikorita stated that the BMKG will install two ocean radars in the Sunda Strait.
