The Jakarta Population and Civil Registration Service recorded the highest number of mixed marriages between American men and Indonesian women from 2020 to August 2025.

The Head of Civil Registration at the Jakarta Population and Civil Registration Office, Witri Yenny, in a podcast titled “From the Wedding Hall to the Civil Registry: Cross-Border Marriages,” which was broadcast in Jakarta on Tuesday, 23rd of September, divulged that the number of mixed marriages between American men and Indonesian women was 158.

There were also 132 couples involving Singaporean men and Indonesian women, along with 120 pairs of German men and Indonesian women. Additionally, the data shows 113 couples between Chinese men and Indonesian women, 103 between Australian men and Indonesian women, 99 between Malaysian men and Indonesian women, 90 between Japanese men and Indonesian women, 90 between Dutch men and Indonesian women, 84 between English men and Indonesian women, and 55 between South Korean men and Indonesian women.

Meanwhile, mixed marriages between Indonesian men and foreign women are most common between Indonesian men and Singaporean women, with a total of 58 couples. Then, Indonesian men-Chinese women (53 pairs), Indonesian men-Japanese women (47), Indonesian men-Malaysian women (41), Indonesian men-South Korean women (36), Indonesian men-Australian women (22), Indonesian men-Filipino women (22), Indonesian men-Thai women (18), Indonesian men-Vietnamese women (17), and Indonesian men-Indian women (16).

“If the husband is an Indonesian citizen and the wife is a foreigner, it’s different; Singaporeans are more preferred [as their wife],” Yenny remarked.

The total number of mixed marriages reported to the Jakarta Population and Civil Registration Office from 2020 to August 2025 was 1,952.

“The average from 2020 to 2025 is around 250-300 couples per year,” Yenny summarised.

Mixed marriages in Indonesia are regulated in Articles 57 to 62 of Law Number 1 of 1974 concerning Marriage. Here, a mixed marriage is defined as a marriage between two individuals: an Indonesian citizen and a foreign citizen. In DKI Jakarta Province, particularly, evidence of marriage must include possession of a Family Card (Kartu Keluarga) and an e-National ID (e-Kartu Tanda Penduduk or e-KTP) as provided by the provincial government.

Marriages between Indonesian citizens and foreign citizens can be registered at the province’s Population and Civil Registration Office. A number of documents that need to be brought to the office include, but are not limited to, a marriage blessing letter from a religious leader and a marriage permit letter from the state or state representative (for foreign nationals). If the couple has a marriage agreement, it is necessary to attach a marriage agreement deed from a sworn-in notary based in Indonesia.
