Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung revealed that the hotel complex around Bundaran HI (Hotel Indonesia Roundabout), including the Grand Hyatt, Pullman, Mandarin Oriental and Hotel Indonesia Kempinski, will be connected via an underground passage integrated with the mass rapid transit (MRT) system.
Anung said the underground connection would eliminate the need for pedestrians to cross the street at surface level.
“You probably couldn’t imagine Grand Hyatt, with Pullman, Mandarin, [and] Kempinski would be connected underground. They will eventually be connected to the MRT [as well],” the Governor said while speaking on stage at the 499th Jakarta Anniversary Celebration at Bundaran HI in Central Jakarta on Saturday, 27th of June.
Anung also touched on how transport improvements are continuously being made to reduce congestion in Jakarta. He noted that one of the causes of congestion is the high mobility of residents from surrounding areas who travel in and out of the capital on a daily basis.
“One of the causes of traffic congestion in Jakarta is the arrival of approximately four million people daily. [That means] in the evening, approximately four million return home [from Jakarta]. That’s what Jakarta is currently managing,” the Governor said.
In addition to connecting the hotel complexes in the Bundaran HI area, the underground space will also be used to accommodate micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), following a model adopted in several major cities around the world.
“There will also be many MSMEs inside, just like in major cities around the world,” the Governor said.
In addition to the redevelopment of the Bundaran HI area, Anung also revealed plans to build a Pedestrian Deck in the Dukuh Atas area to further strengthen connectivity between modes of transport and improve pedestrian comfort in the capital’s centre.
“We’ll also be building a Pedestrian Deck in Dukuh Atas,” the Governor added.
