As a multinational environment, ACG School Jakarta is committed to meeting the diverse needs of the students. To achieve this, the school combines two globally recognised curricula, the International Baccalaureate (IB) and the Cambridge International Examinations, with 47 subjects and 32 extracurricular activities. Each pathway is carefully tailored to ensure every student can flourish academically while discovering their personal interests and talents.

Beyond academics, ACG School Jakarta emphasises the value of open-mindedness for the students. Central to its philosophy is the principle of open-mindedness, a quality embraced by not only the students but also the teachers and staff. According to the School Principal, Myles D’airelle, open-mindedness enables students to develop empathy. Consequently, students and the teachers, as well as the staff, are able to influence others positively and push themselves to the limit.

ACG School Jakarta: Nurturing Your Child’s Through Open-mindednessMyles, who prefers to be called “Bapak”, said that there are a few students who are afraid to speak in front of people. He realised that not every student was born with natural confidence. In this case, he believes that empathy holds a strong role.

“With the students who may be a bit shyer, you have to start small. You might start with a small group of friends, two or three, and learn to build public presentations in ever increasing length. We build that through public speaking in different opportunities. The more opportunities they have, the more normal it is [to speak publicly],” he said.

Other than that, the school also tries to do creative methods, such as recording students who give presentations.

“Students are able to listen and watch the recordings to love themselves more. Even more, the teacher will ask, ‘How do you feel when you watch and listen to it?’ and ‘How do you feel when you watch your friends? Do you think they will listen to you if you do the same?’” Myles continued.

Those questions enable students to build empathy within themselves and relationships with others, both inside and outside of the classes.

“Yes, there is a little bit of a push, sometimes, but they can also understand what other people learn from them as well,” Myles said, who has been leading the school for four years. In the end, empathy can be built with open-mindedness to understand other students’ challenges in speaking in front of people.
