The 2026 Vesak Lantern Festival will be held at Borobudur Temple on Sunday, the 31st of May 2026, with ticket prices starting from Rp65,000 per person.

Soon, the series of Vesak celebrations in Borobudur will reach its peak on the night of the 31st of May 2026. Thousands of people will gather to release thousands of lanterns, billed as the Full Moon Festival,” wrote Borobudur Temple Tourism Park in a joint Instagram post with PT Aviasi Pariwisata Indonesia (InJourney) and PT Taman Wisata Candi Borobudur, Prambanan dan Ratu Boko (InJourney Destinations) uploaded on Monday, the 25th of May.

InJourney Destinations further noted that the release of lanterns symbolises hope, prayer, and pure intentions, as they, like lanterns, are sent to the heavens above.

“Experience a profound spiritual journey during the Waisak celebration at the majestic Borobudur Temple. Under the starlit sky and the grandeur of the world’s largest Buddhist monument, you are invited to release a lantern—a symbol of hope, prayer, and pure intentions sent soaring into the heavens. Witness the night transform into a breathtaking sea of light, creating a perfect harmony between history, culture, and inner peace. This is more than just a celebration; it is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that will fill your heart with tranquillity and timeless memories,” wrote InJourney Destinations on its official website as well.

Vesak celebrations at Borobudur Temple typically begin with the gathering of blessed water and the Dharma fire. This is followed by the Pradaksina procession, the Vesak ceremony at Borobudur Temple, and finally, the evening release of lanterns, billed as the Full Moon Festival, which also takes place at Borobudur Temple.

There are two ticket categories for the 2026 Vesak Lantern Festival: domestic and foreign. For those who are not yet familiar, Sunrise Pradaksina is a sacred Buddhist walking meditation performed at the break of dawn.

This will then be followed by a profound meditation session as the first light of day gently illuminates the stupas. For both domestic and foreign tourists, tickets for Sunrise Pradaksina and meditation are priced at Rp600,000 per person.
