Asthma may present challenges, but with the right treatment and support, athletes can still compete at the highest level.

Regular physical activity is highly recommended for everyone, including athletes. However, for those living with asthma, managing this respiratory condition—particularly during training—can present significant challenges. According to dr Rifian Arnanda, Sp.P, a pulmonologist at Bethsaida Hospital Serang, diagnosing asthma is crucial, as it affects not only general health but also an athlete’s performance.

“Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease of the airways that affects many people worldwide. Although it cannot be completely cured, its symptoms can be effectively controlled with proper treatment,” explained dr Rifian.

According to the European Respiratory Society (ERS) and the European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (EAACI), in collaboration with the Global Allergy and Asthma Excellence Network (GA2LEN), exercise-induced asthma (EIA) refers to asthma symptoms that occur following physical activity. This condition is triggered by intense exercise, which can dry out the airways and increase airflow. A reduction in lung function (FEV1) following standard exercise is known as exercise-induced bronchoconstriction (EIB).

The importance of screening young athletes aiming to improve performance cannot be overstated. Many athletes tend to conceal their asthma, making it more difficult to manage. Therefore, close collaboration between athletes, coaches, and medical professionals is essential to establish appropriate treatment goals and effective preventive strategies.

dr Rifian added, “With proper asthma management, athletes can continue to perform at the highest level, as demonstrated by several well-known athletes who also live with asthma, such as David Beckham, Dennis Rodman, and Paula Radcliffe.”

Based on recommendations from the Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA), inhaled corticosteroid (ICS) therapy is strongly recommended for adolescents and young adults as a controller treatment to prevent relapses. In addition, consultation with a pulmonologist is advised to ensure appropriate treatment and to develop an asthma action plan—an essential step in helping athletes maintain optimal performance.

“Effective asthma management is key for athletes to continue achieving without limitations. At Bethsaida Hospital Serang, we are committed to providing high-quality services and holistic care for all patients, including athletes who wish to optimise their performance,” said dr Tirtamulya, Director of Bethsaida Hospital Serang.
