Get to Know the British School of Bali: A UK-based Education on the Island of the Gods

The British School of Bali offers a bright, modern environment where children aged 2–11 years (Pre-Nursery to Year 6) can learn, play, explore, and grow.

For parents—especially, perhaps, expatriate parents—who are currently based in Bali and whose children are now old enough to be enrolled at school, finding the best educational environment can be pretty challenging.

More parents these days understand how important it is for their children to have a local-meets-global attitude from an early age, while also giving them the resources they will need to succeed in school as well as society. It makes sense that parents today would be troubled by the numerous questions they have in their minds. “Can my child thrive here?” “Can this school prepare my child for such a fast-paced future?” “Can these educators help me guide my child in certain aspects where I cannot?”

Fortunately, the British School of Bali (BSB) may be the answer to those headspinning questions. Currently enrolling pupils for Early Years and Primary levels, BSB sets itself apart from other international schools in Bali thanks to its United Kingdom (UK)-based curriculum, highly experienced board of governance and forward-thinking approach to education.

British education on the Island of the Gods

First opening its doors to pupils on the 1st September, 2025, BSB quickly established its mission to deliver an outstanding education for children in the region aged 2-11. Situated in the vibrant heart of Bali’s Ubud District, BSB prides itself on its high standards, employing top-class educators of global experience, all for the purpose of ensuring an exceptional beginning for each pupil’s educational journey.

As quoted from the official website of BSB, Grace Thorne, the current Acting Head of School, highlighted that a high-quality British education is the epicentre of the school’s educational journey, which is further enriched by the unique culture as well as natural environment of the Island of the Gods.

At BSB, we recognise that every child’s journey is unique. We are dedicated to providing a strong foundation that equips our pupils with the skills, character and mindset needed to thrive—both now and in the future,” Thorne underscored.

BSB is proud to be part of The Schools Trust, a UK-based educational foundation that provides the governance framework and academic direction for our school. As a member of this established family of British international schools, we follow the English National Curriculum as our statutory framework, ensuring an authentic and rigorous British education at every stage.

Being under the umbrella of The Schools Trust connects BSB to over 50 years of combined experience in leading outstanding international schools. This partnership reinforces our commitment to academic excellence, high-quality teaching, strong pastoral care and a broad, balanced curriculum that reflects the very best of British educational tradition.

Our close alignment with the Trust ensures that our standards, leadership and long-term vision remain firmly rooted in UK best practice, while enabling us to benefit from shared expertise and strategic guidance. It also connects us to a wider educational network that values integrity, ambition and global outlook.

Through our place within The Schools Trust family, BSB delivers a premium British education—combining tradition with innovation—and prepares pupils with the knowledge, character and confidence to thrive in an international world.

One interesting fact: Including BSB, the Schools Trust have established 19 exceptional schools around the world—the most recent ones are the British School of Vilnius and the British School of Lisbon.

Both state-of-the-art and traditional

The BSB campus, which is located within the luxury Onyx Park Resort in Ubud, is designed as both state-of-the-art and traditional learning spaces.

Some of the school’s resource-rich features are, just to name a few, naturally lit classrooms; interactive whiteboards with digital learning tools like one iPad per pupil and access to STEAM and robotics resources; purpose-built playgrounds with an outdoor Early Years classroom; a 400-seat auditorium; sports areas for team sports like basketball and football; multiple swimming pools, and; a dedicated gymnastics suite.

BSB plans to expand its campus further in the near future. In order to expand its offerings to include Year 7—the first year of secondary education in the UK academic system, which usually starts in September—the school will open its newly constructed campus in April of this year. Furthermore, this new and enlarged campus will have improved amenities intended to help pupils in their academic, creative, as well as social endeavours—particularly as they advance and transition from one level of education to the next.

Rigorous, child-centred, personalised and global

The English National Curriculum (ENC), which is widely recognised as the gold standard in international education due to its academic brilliance, rigour, and worldwide recognition, serves as the foundation for the curriculum at BSB. The school also incorporates studies of local culture, language and tradition to enhance this curriculum framework and provide its pupils a stronger focus on global citizenship.

In a nutshell, the curriculum at BSB is rooted in the following core traits:

  • Rigorous: Learning at BSB is mostly question-based with an emphasis on problem-solving in order to build pupils’ ability to reason and think independently, which, ultimately, may help them attain a high level of competency across all academic subjects;
  • Child-centred: The educators at BSB understand very well, and put such understanding into practice, that teaching and learning are about making the most of the pupils’ natural curiosity to learn and be inquisitive. As the school work gradually becomes more structured in the Primary level, lessons are subsequently planned to be more exciting as well as engaging for the pupils;
  • Personalised: At BSB, educators are trained and empowered to plan the best lessons for their pupils with differentiated outcomes. This enables the educators to match each experience as closely as possible to the individual needs of their respective pupils;
  • Global: Last but not least, a global vision is embedded throughout the entire curriculum, as all subjects extend national borders.

In addition, BSB provides a variety of clubs for after-school, extracurricular and enrichment activities that are designed to expose pupils to potential hobbies, foster their interest in specific sports, and/or stimulate their curiosity in subjects that they may not otherwise be exposed to through the regular curriculum in the classroom. It should also be noted that all pupils at BSB are obliged to attend a particular after-school club for a minimum of one term, which enables them to understand and practise the value of commitment and dedication.
