A Vision Rooted in Experience
A for Effort was founded 10 years ago by Charmaine Heilijgers, a graduate of an international school in Jakarta and a former IB student. Having personally experienced the pace and expectations of international curricula within Jakarta’s school system, she recognised a clear gap in the tutoring landscape.
While tutoring options existed, few were truly aligned with how international schools approached learning, assessment and analytical thinking. The structure of grading rubrics, the depth of exam questions and the standards expected of students required a more intentional, curriculum-aligned method.
What began with a single lesson has since grown into a centre delivering over 1,200 private lessons each month—built on the belief that international students in Jakarta deserve academic support that mirrors the standards of their schools.
Designed for Focus, Built for Growth
Located in South Jakarta, within easy reach of major residential areas and international schools, A for Effort recently completed a significant renovation and expansion. The centre now spans two full floors with 18 classrooms of various sizes, designed to support both private and semi-private lessons.
Dedicated classrooms for elementary students include interactive learning corners that make foundational math, science and English engaging as well as approachable. Classrooms for middle and high school students are designed for deeper concentration and focused academic preparation.
An in-house coffee and pastry corner provides a comfortable space for parents and students between sessions, reinforcing that while academic standards remain high, the atmosphere is encouraging and motivating—a place the students genuinely look forward to coming to. A dedicated science lab space is also currently in development, allowing younger students to engage in hands-on science experiments and experiential learning.
The renovation was not simply about expansion; it was about creating a learning environment that reflects the seriousness of international academic standards while remaining energising and supportive.

After a full school day, students need more than repetition; they need clarity and encouragement. At A for Effort, lessons are structured yet dynamic, with strong emphasis placed on engagement and positive reinforcement. When students feel supported and interested, they absorb material more confidently and retain it more effectively.
A for Effort specialises in math, science and English, supporting students from elementary through high school across international curricula, including IB, AP and IGCSE. Lessons are available onsite at the South Jakarta centre as well as online, serving families throughout Jakarta, Bali and other cities in Indonesia, while also supporting students internationally so they can continue their tutoring seamlessly even when relocating abroad.
Signature Programmes That Set the Standard
A for Effort’s Summer School, which is a five-week fun and engaging Math & Science programme for Elementary students held every June and July, has become one of the most popular in Jakarta and is consistently fully booked.
Additionally, every year, the IB Math Exam Preparation Programme is offered specifically for final-year IB students, delivering focused and intensive sessions designed to equip them with the clarity, precision and confidence required for their final IB Math examinations.
