Major flooding occurred on Wednesday morning, the 10th of September, in Jembrana Regency following heavy rainfall, spreading to four cities and regencies in Bali and paralysing the main road connecting Denpasar, Kerobokan, and Canggu.
Affected areas, besides Jembrana, included Gianyar, Tabanan, Klungkung, and Denpasar City.
The Denpasar Region III Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (Badan Meteorologi, Klimatologi, dan Geofisika or BMKG) reported that light to heavy rain, accompanied by strong winds and lightning, had fallen across most parts of Bali since Tuesday morning, the 9th of September.
The Head of the Bali Regional Disaster Management Agency, I Gede Agung Teja Bhusana Yadnya, stated that the flooding was the worst in a decade. As a result, at least two people lost their lives, and more than 200 people were evacuated from various areas. The first victim, NK (23), who was two months pregnant, was returning home with her husband, BR, on a motorcycle at 2.30 AM local time, but her husband survived. Furthermore, IKOS (38) also died after slipping and drowning in floodwaters.
The Jembrana Regional Disaster Management Agency and Public Order Agency (Satpol PP), together with the Indonesian National Armed Forces, the Indonesian National Police, village officials, and other volunteers, have been deployed to the affected areas to carry out evacuations and respond swiftly.
“At 1 AM last night, we began receiving reports from residents that their homes started being filled with water. We have been evacuating and rescuing residents whose homes are flooded [since then],” said the Head of the Jembrana BPBD, I Putu Agus Artana Putra, on Wednesday.
Putra also added, “There were already 20 locations affected by flooding. At the police station, 16 people were evacuated. We have provided food assistance, and the fire department has also supplied clean water,” he continued.
The Kumbasari Market area and Jalan Pura Demak were reported as being the areas most damaged by the flood.
“There are 43 flooding points in Denpasar City, but the most severe flooding is in the Kumbasari Market area and Jalan Pura Demak,” Governor Wayan Koster told the press as well.
Additionally, Koster said the vendors would receive compensation.
“I asked the mayor to calculate the losses in buildings and other materials, including items owned solely by the vendors. All compensation will be used using a shared budget from the Bali Provincial Budget and the Denpasar City Budget,” he added.
