Daan Mogot Residents Demand Relocation of Asylum Seekers to Better Place

Residents of Daan Mogot, West Jakarta, have urged the government to relocate the asylum seekers living in a building previously used by the West Jakarta Military Command (Kodim).

According to the residents, the area has become congested as the Jakarta government has stopped aiding the asylum seekers.

The residents feel sorry for asylum seekers who have to live in a small place. “It’s better if they are moved to a different place,” the banner reads.

The banner attached by the residents also lists three places recommended to shelter the asylum seekers: athlete’s guesthouses, Rawa Buaya subsidised apartments, or Serang Margaluyu apartments. According to them, the former Kodim building is not suitable to host a thousand people as the place lacks basic facilities including toilets, electricity, and water.

The Jakarta administration has also asked the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to repatriate the refugees with no response.
