Two children died on Thursday from a grenade explosion in Cibungbulang village, Bogor regency, West Java, while a third is currently being treated for serious injuries.

10-year-old Muhammad Mubarok was killed instantly in the blast, while his friend Muhammad Doni, 14, succumbed to his wounds later that same day at Leuwiliang Hospital, wartakota.tribunnews.com reported.

Khoirul Islami, 10, was badly injured and is still being treated at the hospital.

Bogor Regency Military District commander Lt. Col. Harry Eko Sutrisno said the three children had likely found the old, rusted grenade while playing in the hilly military training grounds of Kapur Mountain.

They reportedly took the grenade with them to one of their homes and played with it before the device exploded at around 2pm.

Civilians are prohibited from entering the military training grounds, Harry said.

“It is on the hillside, maybe around 2 kilometres [from the nearest residential area],” he said.

“It was a buried grenade. The children did not know what it was […] They played with it, without knowing that it was active.”
