A police officer was shot over the weekend in Central Kalimantan amid a sustained anti-drug operation in the area, prompting renewed warnings to steer clear of the narcotics trade and exercise caution.
Local police spokesman Qori Wicaksono said the officer was shot during an operation in Tewah village, Central Kalimantan, on Sunday, May 21. He was shot by a suspected drug dealer, identified as YL, as the suspect attempted to flee.
YL’s drug operation was uncovered by the drug task force unit following community reports.
The unit operation, led by Wicaksono, involved more than 60 police officers. YL tried to hide in his house, but was quickly discovered by police.
During preparations, the unit learned five other acquaintances of YL were in the house — though not believed to be part of the drug operation — limiting options. The unit surrounded the house, at which point YL began shooting at police and threatening to kill himself.
Police officer Faska Chandra was shot on his left shoulder and YL sustained a shot to his hip and was then subdued by police.
“Three more suspect were caught at the scene. Meanwhile, Faska Chandra was taken to the Kuala Kurun Hospital for treatment,” Wicaksono said, as quoted by Okezone.
The four suspects were taken to the local police station for further investigations. Wicaksono said that while no meth was found at the scene, the four suspects remain the target in the police operation.
