The ANZA Charity Ball is an annual event well-known within Jakarta’s expat circles. Each year, a new theme is chosen, and attendees diligently craft outfits that are glamorous, opulent, magical, scary, or fun—whatever the brief calls for! The Ball features a beautifully decorated ballroom, a delicious three-course meal, best-dressed prizes, numerous excellent raffle prizes, and exciting silent auction offerings to browse. The ANZA Ball also always features a live band—in recent years, the wonderful CenterStage—that keeps the dance floor lively all evening long. Aside from a brief pause during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Charity Ball has remained a significant ANZA yearly event and an expected part of the Jakarta expat’s social calendar.
For those unfamiliar with ANZA or new to the scene, here’s a quick overview of who ANZA is and why our Charity Ball is so important to us. ANZA stands for Australia & New Zealand Association, and we’ve been bringing expats together for over 50 years. We are a volunteer-run, not-for-profit expatriate association with members from over 43 different countries. While 45% are from Australia or New Zealand, we actively encourage and welcome members from all nationalities to join us. We offer a wide range of activities to bring members together on a weekly and monthly basis. We offer support to new arrivals in Jakarta and provide an important community space for people to find companionship and perhaps learn a new skill!
The other reason we exist is to support our local community and give back to the people who live in this beautiful city. All ANZA activities and events are organised to raise funds for ANZA’s social welfare programme, which currently provides regular and long-term financial support to eight charity groups in Jakarta. These include three elderly food kitchens (pusakas), a child nutrition programme, a home for children with disabilities, a university scholarship and leadership programme, a soft drug rehabilitation programme, and an orphanage. We have a dedicated group of volunteers who help ANZA monitor these projects, ensuring that each rupiah raised makes the greatest impact.
The ANZA Charity Ball is ANZA’s major fundraising event each year. It’s designed for attendees to have maximum fun while raising money that goes directly to those important causes. This year’s theme is ‘Stars of the Small Screen’, and we invite you to come dressed as your favourite characters from the world of television.
