Travel Smart and Stay Safe in Indonesia

Stay safe while exploring Indonesia with expert guidance, emergency contacts, and real-time updates to handle natural events and crises effectively.

As one of the world’s most dynamic travel destinations, Indonesia prioritises visitor safety by implementing robust systems to manage natural events and emergencies. The country’s Tourism Board has issued practical advice for travellers, ensuring they can enjoy their adventures with peace of mind while staying prepared.

Indonesia is well-equipped for natural events, thanks to advanced monitoring and rapid response capabilities. The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) provides early warnings for tsunamis, earthquakes, and disasters caused by volcanic eruptions or tectonic shifts. The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) is responsible for issuing disaster warnings and managing responses to events such as floods and landslides. The Ministry of Health also plays a vital role, in alerting the public to health emergencies like disease outbreaks. Travellers are encouraged to download the Siaga BNPB app for real-time updates on safety information.

In the event of a natural disaster, Indonesian authorities act swiftly to ensure public safety. Land closures are immediately enforced in affected areas, with updates broadcast through TV, radio, and mobile alerts. Designated evacuation points are prepared and complete with essential infrastructure such as clean water, toilets, and temporary shelters. Security personnel are deployed to maintain calm and ensure order during emergencies.

Visitors are advised to keep essential emergency contact numbers readily available. For general emergencies, dial 110 or 112. Ambulance and medical assistance can be reached at 118 or 119, while fire services are available at 113. For search and rescue operations, contact BASARNAS at 115, and for natural disaster assistance, BNPB can be reached at 129. Additionally, 112 serves as the nationwide emergency number.

During emergencies, travellers must follow instructions and evacuation orders from local authorities. Staying calm and heading to designated safe zones is essential, as is avoiding high-risk or restricted areas. Travellers should stay informed through trusted sources such as BMKG and BNPB, using mobile apps, radio, or TV for updates. Ignoring evacuation orders, entering restricted areas, or taking photos near disaster zones is strongly discouraged, as these actions can jeopardise safety.

International visitors have several support systems available during crises. Embassies provide guidance and assistance, while Tourism Crisis Centres can help with visa or passport issues. For travel-related emergencies, the Ministry of Tourism’s hotline, +62 21 3838899, is available to assist. Staying informed through the Siaga BNPB app ensures access to the latest safety updates and advice.

By staying informed, prepared, and connected, tourists can explore Indonesia’s wonders with confidence, knowing their safety and well-being are prioritised.
