Bank Indonesia Governor Perry Warjiyo voluntarily resigned from his position due to personal reasons.

Perry Warjiyo first served as Governor of Bank Indonesia from 2018 to 2023. He was then reappointed for the 2023–2028 term. Prior to becoming Governor, he served as Deputy Governor of Bank Indonesia from 2013 to 2018. Earlier, from 2009 to 2013, he served as Assistant Governor for Monetary, Macroprudential, and International Policy, as well as Executive Director of the Department of Economic Research and Monetary Policy at Bank Indonesia.

After graduating from the Faculty of Economics at Gadjah Mada University in Yogyakarta in 1982, Warjiyo continued his studies at Iowa State University, where he earned a Master’s degree in 1989 and a PhD in 1991.

Destry Damayanti will serve as the Acting Governor of Bank Indonesia following Warjiyo’s resignation. In her statement, Damayanti revealed that Warjiyo had resigned voluntarily due to personal reasons.

“In connection with Perry Warjiyo’s voluntary resignation from the position of Governor of Bank Indonesia for personal reasons on the 25th of July, 2026 […] the Board of Governors, in its Board of Governors Meeting on the 26th of July, 2026, appointed Senior Deputy Governor Destry Damayanti as Acting Governor in accordance with Article 50 paragraph 2 of the Bank Indonesia Law,” she said in a press conference at Bank Indonesia on Monday, the 27th of July.

The Indonesian Minister of State Secretary, Prasetyo Hadi, also stated that Warjiyo’s resignation letter as Governor of Bank Indonesia was officially received by President Prabowo Subianto on Sunday, the 26th of July.

“As of yesterday, we officially received the resignation letter from the Governor of Bank Indonesia to the President,” Hadi said on Monday as well.

In response to Warjiyo’s resignation, Didik J. Rachbini, a senior economist at the Institute for Development of Economics and Finance, remarked that the new Governor of Bank Indonesia must play a crucial role in maintaining the rupiah exchange rate. He believes that the Governor of Bank Indonesia is the official most responsible for ensuring the future stability of the rupiah. Therefore, through coordination with the Indonesian Ministry of Finance and the Indonesian Ministry of Trade, Investment, and Industry, the Governor of Bank Indonesia is expected to maintain the rupiah exchange rate, which is closely linked to international trade, investment, and fiscal performance.

“Coordination is a must, and maintaining the exchange rate is Bank Indonesia’s absolute responsibility. The new Governor of Bank Indonesia must not be passive in this coordination [by only carrying out monetary duties] but must play a leading role in coordination with other ministries,” he said.

Additionally, M. Rizal Taufikurahman, Head of the Macroeconomics and Finance Centre at the Institute for Development of Economics and Finance, predicted that market participants would closely monitor the reasons behind Warjiyo’s resignation.

“From an economic perspective, the resignation of the Governor of Bank Indonesia amid rupiah pressure is a sensitive institutional shock for the market. Market players will assess the reasons for the resignation, the quality of the transition process, and whether the change is related to political pressure on the direction of monetary policy,” he remarked as well.
