The Indonesian aviation industry will welcome a new player, Fly Jaya, which is under the auspices of PT Surya Mataram Nusantara.
Fly Jaya is targeting a mid-2025 launch, with a primary focus on serving remote areas in Indonesia that have previously been less accessible to commercial airlines. According to information from the official Fly Jaya website, the initial routes will include Jakarta-Bandung, Jakarta-Balikpapan, Jakarta-Yogyakarta, and return trips for these destinations. Fly Jaya has already obtained a standard permit from the Ministry of Transportation in December 2024, but it still needs to secure an Air Operator Certificate (AOC) before its aircraft can fully operate.
Responding to the emergence of this new airline, the Minister of Transportation, Dudy Purwagandhi, stated that he had not yet received an application for an operating permit from Fly Jaya.
“Incidentally, I haven’t seen it on my desk. Later, I will try to check with the staff whether there is an application [for an operating permit from Fly Jaya],” Purwagandhi told the press on Tuesday, the 21st of January.
Nevertheless, Purwagandhi mentioned that his office welcomes Fly Jaya and other airlines that aim to improve air transportation services in Indonesia.
“I think we must welcome the presence of the airline, whatever it is that can serve the public better,” Purwagandhi added.
Meanwhile, the Minister of State-Owned Enterprises (Badan Usaha Milik Negara or BUMN), Erick Thohir, responded positively to Fly Jaya’s entry into the aviation industry.
“Indonesia needs 750 aircraft; today’s condition is only 410 [aircraft] for domestic services. So, of course, anyone who invests in increasing the number of aircraft must be welcomed,” Thohir remarked to the press on Tuesday as well.
As quoted from ANTARA News, one of Fly Jaya’s key advantages is the use of a modern fleet of ATR 72-500 aircraft. These twin turboprop planes are designed specifically for short-haul regional travel. In addition to their ergonomic design, the ATR 72-500 offers energy-saving and environmentally friendly fuel efficiency.
Fly Jaya was launched by PT Surya Mataram Nusantara, with its head office located in Senayan, South Jakarta.
