Will Indonesia’s Highway Payment become 100% Cashless by October 2017?

Highway Payment

Indonesia’s road toll payments will be 100 percent cashless by October this year, Bank Indonesia Governor Agus Martowardojo promised after meeting with the Minister for Public Works and Housing Basuki Hadimuljono.

“We already have the programme. This October, everything will be cashless,” Hadimuljono said, as quoted by Detik.

The Ministry of Public Works and Housing will team up with Bank Indonesia to prepare for the update, including a public education campaign.

“Bank Indonesia will provide information to the bank industry and we at the Ministry will relay to highway business entities,” Herry Trisaputra Zuna, head of the Highway Regulatory Agency at the Ministry, said.

The cashless booths are ready to be installed, he added.

Easily accessible top-up facilities for users are still being worked on, while Bank Indonesia reaches out to both state-owned and private banks to issues toll payment cards.

“There will be a universal reader machine for all kinds of issued highway payment cards. We’re doing trials on the prototype. The first trial will be conducted on the Cikarang-Paliman, Cikarang-Bandung and Juanda-Waru toll segments,” he said.

To date, 23 percent of the project has been completed. While there’s still some way to go, the government is optimistic the project will be a success.
