President Jokowi Grants Amnesty for Baiq Nuril

Baiq Nuril

“I have signed the Keppres for Ibu Nuril this morning. So, Ibu Nuril is allowed to take the decree at the Palace whenever needed,” President Joko Widodo stated at Halim Perdanakusuma Airport yesterday, July 29, 2019.

Jokowi also stated that he wouldn’t mind meeting Nuril directly after the issuance of the decree. Baiq Nuril, a staff member at Mataram state senior high school (SMAN) 7, was sentenced to six months in jail and a fine of Rp500million for violating Article 27(1) of the Law on Electronic Information and Transaction (ITE Law). She had released a recording of her being sexually assaulted by the headmaster. However, she was declared guilty for spreading sexually explicit content.

Earlier, the Supreme court, or Mahkamah Agung (MA), rejected Baiq’s appeal on 4th July 2019. Following the negative outcome, she then submitted her request for amnesty to President Jokowi.
