Immigration data shows an increase in foreign nationals entering and/or passing through Central Java, reaching 39,809 people from January to March 2026, and is dominated by citizens of China, South Korea, Taiwan, and the United States (US).
The Head of the Central Java Immigration Office, Haryono Agus Setiawan, remarked that the high mobility of foreigners demonstrates that Central Java is a vital part of foreign nationals’ activities. On the other hand, he also emphasised the need for action against foreigners who encounter legal issues. Therefore, any findings require personnel to increase supervision to ensure compliance with legal regulations, particularly immigration laws.
“However, there are significant challenges. In 2025, 197 legal actions were taken against foreigners [in Central Java]. Most were for overstaying and misuse of residence permits, often involving activities without official permits. Therefore, the immigration function is crucial for administrative oversight and safeguarding national sovereignty,” he explained to the press on Thursday, the 12th of March.
Meanwhile, the Acting Head of Central Java’s National and Political Unity Agency (Badan Kesatuan Bangsa dan Politik or Kesbangpol), Pradana Agung Nugraha, encouraged the Foreigner Surveillance Team (Tim Pengawasan Orang Asing or Timpora) to collaborate in exchanging data between agencies to strengthen supervision of foreign national activities.
“We are encouraging steps to increase data exchange between agencies and collaborate with Central Java’s Kesbangpol, local governments and immigration. We [Central Java’s Kesbangpol] are an extension of the regional government agency that oversees foreigners. Therefore, at the very least, we are actively involved in maintaining regional security and a healthy economic growth,” he said.
Furthermore, Nugraha observed that the high number of foreigners in the province also indicates that Central Java remains open to investment potential. Many investors may be attracted to Central Java due to its competitiveness.
“And the Governor has encouraged regencies and cities to establish industrial zones. Indeed, many countries are interested, but the majority are from China,” he said as well.
The year 2026 marks an important one for immigration. Lawyer and Gerindra Party politician Hendarsam Marantoko has recently been appointed Director General of Immigration at the Indonesian Ministry of Immigration and Correctional Services, with his official inauguration scheduled to take place in April.
