A high-speed maritime transportation system known as AirFish is set to operate on the Singapore–Batam route in the second half of 2026.

AirFish is a wing-in-ground-effect (WIG) marine vehicle that utilises aerodynamic effects close to the water’s surface to glide at high speed. The mode of transport is designed to carry between eight and 10 passengers, including crew. The vehicle is currently being assembled in Singapore.

In terms of dimensions, the AirFish measures approximately 17 metres in length and 15 metres in width, with a range of more than 300 nautical miles. The craft takes off from the water’s surface and cruises at low altitude over the sea, reducing travel time compared with conventional ferries. The AirFish approval and certification process has been underway since 2024 with Bureau Veritas, an international classification society, to ensure it meets safety and operational standards.

The operational plans were announced by ST Engineering AirX — a joint venture between Singapore-based technology company ST Engineering and start-up Peluca — together with ferry operator BatamFast at the Singapore Airshow 2026. The partnership between the two companies is regarded as a strategic move to deliver transportation innovation while strengthening regional connectivity across Southeast Asia.

However, the operations are still awaiting the completion of all regulatory approvals and final certification from the relevant authorities in both countries.

“We have not yet received the SPB [Surat Persetujuan Berlayar or Port Clearance] application. [The AirFish] looks like a mini aircraft flying over water. We also have yet to know whether the permit will fall under the harbormaster or the aviation authority,” BatamFast Operations Manager Anissa Choirany told the press on Thursday, the 5th of February.
