6.4 Magnitude Quake Shakes Maluku, No Tsunami Warning

An earthquake in Maluku

An earthquake measuring at a magnitude of 6.4 has jolted Maluku Tenggara Barat District in Maluku Province on Sunday morning, 22nd September.

The Meteorological, Climatological and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has released a statement saying that the quake has no potential to cause a tsunami.

The organisation estimated the epicentre of the quake to be at 165 kilometres northwest of the district, at a depth of 11km. On its official website, the BMKG stated that the quake struck at 04.53 local time in Maluku, or Eastern Indonesia Time.

It is no believe that there will be subsequent aftershocks. There have been no reports of injuries or damage so far. Maluku is one of Indonesia’s most earthquake-prone areas. The BMKG also notes that 52 earthquakes have shaken Maluku province in August 2019.
