Police Name Two Suspects East Java Racism Case Against Papuans

Two people have been named as suspects in racist speech reports against Papuan students in Surabaya and Malang, East Java.

According to the coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs, Wiranto, five military personnel have also been suspended for violating military discipline.

“We have named two suspects; Tri Susanti and Saiful. Both were charged with multiple cases,” Wiranto said. The two suspects have been charged under Article 45A and Article 28 Law no. 19/2016 for electronic information and transactions.

The police have also named 28 suspects in Jayapura, 10 in Manokwari, seven in Sorong and one in FakFak.
During the past week, demonstrations have been held in parts of Papua and West Papua for alleged racial slurs targeting Papuan students in Surabaya. The mobs in Papua have also vandalised and set offices and buildings on fire.
