Powerful 6.3 Quake Hit Papua Early Morning, 20th June

a powerful earthquake hit the town of Abepura, Irian Jaya

According to the US Geologic Survey (USGS), a powerful earthquake hit the eastern province of Indonesia at 248 kilometres west of the town of Abepura, Irian Jaya, West Papua.

The quake struck in the early hours today, 20th June.

The area hit by the quake is known to be sparsely populated. The USGS also estimated that the quake had a depth of 12 kilometres.

The movement was felt weakly in Abepura, with most residents did not noticing. Abepura resident Arul Firmansyah told AFP: “I was still awake at home but I did not feel it all and none of my neighbours ran out of their home.”

The quake had a magnitude of 6.3, which is pretty strong on the Richter Scale. Fortunately, there have been no reports of damage or casualties so far. No tsunami warnings have been issued.
