Jakarta Deputy Governor Wants Officials On-Call to Deal with Rainy Season

Jakarta deputy governor Sandiaga Uno has asked all Jakarta administration officials to be on constant alert in facing the rainy season as disasters cannot be predicted.

“So for me, the readiness of the officials, their vigilance and their being on call (is important), so when there is a prediction of climate change, we are ready to face the rainfall which yesterday in Jakarta was pretty heavy,” said Sandiaga at Jakarta Police headquarters on Monday, as quoted by Kompas.

Sandiaga has also ordered for dikes and water pumps to be consistently maintained to help deal with potentially heavy rainfall that may lead to disasters. “The pumps must go in quickly, also the dikes must be maintained and most importantly the readiness of the officials and local agencies in the areas,” Sandiaga said.

Heavy rain hit large parts of Jakarta on Sunday. The rainfall had caused floods to appear in a number of areas. Based on information from the Jakarta Police Traffic Monitoring Center, the flood in South Jakarta reached 20-30 centimetres with Lebak Bulus one of the worst affected areas.
