Ex-military doctor fires gun after refusing to pay parking fee

A CCTV camera caught on video a man firing a gun in an attempt to scare a parking attendant at Gandaria City mall in South Jakarta. The man, identified as Anwari, has subsequently been arrested by the South Jakarta Police.

“He felt insulted when the parking attendant said, ‘well, you have to pay’….he hit [the parking attendant] and took out a gun and fired a shot once upwards,” said South Jakarta Police Chief Iwan Kurniawan, as quoted by Kompas yesterday.

The incident occurred on Friday evening, in the basement of Gandaria City Mall. Anwari, who is a doctor, was driving an official Indonesian Military (TNI) car in the basement of the mall. Anwari told the police he felt entitled to not pay his parking fee of Rp. 5,000 as he was driving an official car. The parking attendant, however, insisted that he pay the parking fee before leaving.

The police have arrested Anwari and charged him with assault and violence. Anwari, who once served as a military doctor, claimed that the gun was given to him by a friend.

He later admitted the car was, in fact, owned by his wife who is currently a serving as a military doctor at Gatot Subroto Army Hospital.
