According to the Central Statistics Agency (Badan Pusat Statistik or BPS), Indonesia records a rise in foreign tourist arrivals and domestic travel in early 2026, with higher spending and longer stays boosting the tourism sector.
The number of international visitors to Indonesia increased compared to the previous year. As of March 2026, foreign tourist arrivals reached 1.09 million, marking a 10.50% rise compared to March 2025.
Cumulatively, from January to March 2026, total foreign arrivals stood at 3.44 million, approximately 8.62% higher than in the same period last year.
“The average expenditure of international tourists per visit in the first quarter of 2026 reached US$1,345.61 (approximately Rp23.4 million), with an average length of stay of 10.84 nights,” said the Head of BPS, Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti, on Tuesday, the 5th of May.
Based on data from BPS, Malaysian tourists remained the largest group of visitors in March 2026, accounting for 186,530 visits (17.14%). This was followed by Australia with 130,720 visits (12.01%), and Singapore with 102,820 visits (9.45%).
BPS also recorded an increase in visitors from India, particularly to Bali. The number reached 157,100 visits, reflecting a 3.90% increase from January to March 2026 compared to the same period in 2025.
On the domestic front, BPS reported a significant surge in internal travel. The number of domestic tourist trips in March 2026 reached 126.34 million, representing a 42.10% increase compared to March 2025.
Cumulatively, domestic travel from January to March 2026 totalled 319.51 million trips, a 13.14% year-on-year increase. This growth in domestic travel was largely driven by seasonal factors, particularly the long weekend and peak holiday periods of Nyepi and Eid al-Fitr, both of which fell in March 2026.
