Indonesia is set to host the first Microsoft Excel World Championship: an exciting new branch of esports, bringing competitors from across the nation together.
With an expected audience of around 800,000 and broadcasting rights held by YouTube and ESPN, the inaugural Microsoft Excel World Championship (MEWC) 2024 stands out as a unique and highly intriguing esports event. This championship is a collaborative effort between the asset management company, PT Pos Properti Indonesia, and the organisation behind the Microsoft Excel-based competition, the Financial Modeling World Cup (FMWC).
“PT Pos Properti Indonesia is committed to continuously promoting the national esports programme by providing a fresh experience of competing in esports through the global MEWC event,” said Junita Roemawi, Director of PT Pos Properti Indonesia, to the press on Tuesday, the 17th of September.
MEWC Indonesia is open to all Indonesian citizens from various backgrounds.
“The Microsoft Excel World Championship invites participants from diverse backgrounds to compete in the Rookie, Professional, and BUMN categories,” added Roemawi.
The tournament will follow a schedule starting with registration, open from August until the 20th of September, 2024. Participants can register in one of the three available categories:
- Rookie: Students from all academic programmes and universities, including undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral levels;
- Professional: The general public and professionals who use Excel in their daily work; or
- BUMN: Representatives from the Ministry of State-Owned Enterprises (BUMN) of the Republic of Indonesia.
Competitors in the Rookie category must pay a registration fee of Rp80,000, whereas the fee for the Professional category is Rp160,000. Lastly, the fee for the BUMN category is Rp5 million.
MEWC 2024 will commence with an online qualifying round for each category on the 5th of October at 2 PM. From this round, eight competitors from each category will advance to the Semi-Final round. Next, two finalists from the Rookie category, three finalists from the Professional category, and three finalists from the BUMN category will be chosen to compete in the Grand Final. The Semi-Final and Grand Final rounds will take place offline at Point Arena, Jakarta, both scheduled for the 13th of October.
The winner of MEWC Indonesia will be awarded the Microsoft Excel World Championship trophy, a certificate, a cash prize of Rp15 million, and will be selected as the MEWC Indonesia delegate to compete in the Microsoft Excel World Championship 2024 Finals in Las Vegas, United States, from the 2nd until the 4th of December.
