The Indonesian men’s badminton team secured the gold medal in the team final at the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games, held at Ichinomiya City Municipal Gymnasium in Aichi, Japan, on Thursday, the 24th of September.
The team emerged victorious after winning three of the five matches in the final tie against China.
In the final, Indonesia initially trailed 0–2 after Jonatan Christie and the men’s doubles pair of Fajar Alfian and Muhammad Shohibul Fikri were defeated by their Chinese counterparts. Indonesia’s comeback began in the third match, when Alwi Farhan defeated Li Shifeng. This was followed by another men’s doubles pair, Leo Rolly Carnando and Daniel Marthin, who defeated the Chinese duo of He Ji Ting and Liu Yi to level the tie at 2–2.
Ultimately, the Garuda team’s campaign was capped by men’s singles player Mohammad Zaki Ubaidillah, who won the deciding match 23–21, 21–13 against China’s Weng Hongyang to secure the gold medal for Indonesia.
The victory marked Indonesia’s first gold medal at the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Games.
“We present the gold medal to [our] beloved Indonesia. For you, our country, we give [our] body and soul!” the Public Relations and Media, Central Board of the All-Indonesia Badminton Association wrote on X on Thursday as well.
In addition to the gold medal, the Indonesian contingent secured three silver and three bronze medals on the same day. The three silver medals came from the men’s 10m air pistol team event in shooting, as well as two rowing events: the lightweight men’s double sculls and the men’s quadruple sculls. Meanwhile, the three bronze medals were contributed by three sports: canoeing, sepak takraw, and mountain biking.
Indonesia currently sits in 16th place with a total of 20 medals, comprising one gold, four silver, and 15 bronze, having previously ranked 23rd without a gold medal. In addition, Indonesia also moved ahead of several Southeast Asian nations that had previously ranked above it, including Singapore, Vietnam, the Philippines, and Myanmar.
