A foreign national from the United Kingdom was found dead after hanging himself in the bathroom of the Class 1 Non-TPI Depok Immigration Office.
The foreign national, identified by the initials DJR (54), is suspected to have been under stress after being arrested and detained for violating his residence permit, leading to him hanging himself in the bathroom of the immigration office. DJR worked as a teacher in Sawangan, Depok. His body was later transported by ambulance, accompanied by several other vehicles.
The Head of Public Relations for the Depok Metro Police, AKP Made Budi, confirmed the incident. He further stated that DJR’s body was evacuated by officers from the Sukmajaya Sector Police and the Depok Metro Police’s Indonesia Automatic Fingerprint Identification System (INAFIS) unit.
“The victim is known to be undergoing a detention process for misusing his residence permit. The victim is from England and was found to be a teacher at a school in the Sawangan Depok area,” Budi divulged.
Budi explained that DJR had initially been detained by the Depok Immigration Office since Monday, 20th of April, for violating his stay permit. On the following Tuesday, at around 3.20 PM local time, CCTV footage showed DJR entering the bathroom. However, he did not immediately return to the detention room.
“When the witness passed by the detention room, the victim was nowhere to be seen,” Budi explained.
The witness immediately reported the incident to officers, who then carried out an inspection. They discovered that the detention room was empty; meanwhile, the bathroom door was closed. Officers then attempted to locate the victim through gaps in the bathroom wall, but were unable to see him.
“[Afterwards,] the officers immediately broke down the bathroom door and found the victim hanging from the bathroom ventilation grill,” Budi continued.
Budi also divulged that DJR committed suicide using a long-sleeved shirt, as his body was found sitting on the toilet. Officers immediately untied the shirt from around his neck and removed him from the bathroom.
“The victim was bleeding from the nose while hanging, and it is suspected he was suffering from depression,” Budi added.
The incident was subsequently handled by the Sukmajaya Police and the Depok Metro Police. The hospital later confirmed DJR’s death. No signs of violence were found.
