Indonesia leads the way with AI-powered immigration technology, revolutionising airport immigration for international arrivals.

Indonesia has become the first country in the world to implement a “seamless corridor” biometric system, allowing passengers and travellers to pass through immigration checks without stopping. This groundbreaking technology, powered by artificial intelligence (AI) solutions from Amadeus, is the first of its kind globally.

The initiative forms part of the Indonesian government’s “All Indonesia” programme, which aims to streamline immigration procedures for international arrivals and enhance airport efficiency. Two seamless corridors are currently being installed at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, Tangerang, with a third planned for Juanda International Airport, Sidoarjo.

In the first phase, priority will be given to elderly passengers and those with special needs, who can register in advance through the All Indonesia app.

This seamless corridor technology is not entirely new to Indonesia; similar systems have been used previously to facilitate the entry of Hajj and Umrah pilgrims. An estimated 220,000 people travel between Indonesia and Saudi Arabia each year. During the trial period, the corridor processed more than 30 border crossings per minute and served a total of 50,000 passengers.

According to Rudy Daniello, the Executive Vice President of AirOps at Amadeus, the combination of digital identity and biometrics at key airport service points has enabled a truly seamless and secure travel experience, with no paperwork, no queues, and no physical barriers.

“The Seamless Corridor is the ‘jewel in the crown’ of our end‑to‑end portfolio for seamless travel, helping to remove friction and queues at the border. In combination with innovations in digital identity and biometrics at key airport service points, it’s finally possible for airlines, airports and governments to provide a truly seamless, secure experience, free from document checks, queues and barriers.” explained Daniello in a press release published on Tuesday, the 18th of November.

The process involves several key steps:

  • Initial Data Sharing: Passengers share their passport details first.
  • Background Check: A background check is completed before they arrive at the airport.
  • Final Authentication: The final authentication is performed as passengers pass through the biometric corridor.
