Bali Nine Drug Smuggler May Face Charges in Australia after being Released

Bali Nine drug smuggler Renae Lawrence is unaware she could be arrested by Australian police as soon as she returns to Sydney, her dad says.

Lawrence is due to land in Sydney next Wednesday after spending 13 years behind bars in Indonesia for drug smuggling.

In 2005, Australian police issued an arrest warrant for Lawrence over an alleged high speed chase in a stolen car in Sydney.

“As far as I know she has just got to report to Gosford Police station when she gets back, that’s what Renae was told,” Bob Lawrence told nine.com.au from his home.

Lawrence was due to face court over the pursuit one month later but she was arrested with 2.2kg of heroin strapped to her back and legs at Bali’s airport, along with eight other Australians attempting to smuggle the drug.

“A 41-year-old woman has two outstanding warrants for offences including steal motor vehicle, drive unlicensed, speeding and fail to comply with police directions,” a police spokesman told nine.com.au.

Mr Lawrence said he was also in the dark about the planned execution of the arrest warrant, adding: “Of course it’s a worry but as far as I know she has only got to report to Gosford Police.”

The drug smuggler’s father said he knew little about Renae’s plans for when she returned but did not believe she would be moving back into the family home.

Mr Lawrence declined to comment further, saying his daughter had asked him not to speak to the media.
